Redevelopment of the Park of the "Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo di Metelliano"
(Parish Church of Saint Michael the Archangel), Cortona
The project concerning the Sant’Angelo complex, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, Mission 1 Component 3 Measure 2 Intervention 2.2, resulted in the creation of this website. A multimedia channel that ensures the full enhancement of the complex and accessibility to the cultural and natural itineraries and content developed.
The intervention led to the redevelopment of the church’s outdoor spaces, driven by the firm intention to restore proper dignity to a nationally significant monument and to create around this Heritage Site a proactive and sustainable movement of social life. The church is now a focal point open to local residents, to the many foreign visitors who come to these places for tourism, and to the numerous pilgrims who often stop in the rooms made available to them in parts of the rectory.
Through this intervention, the park was redeveloped with the creation of a garden featuring tree species from the local tradition. This has enhanced the site’s natural appeal and placed the church at the center of an educational and informative process involving the entire surrounding area. An informational path, with panels also accessible digitally (designed using QR Code technology), allows full access to all information regarding the history of the building, the artworks it contains, the natural elements that make up the new park, and its relationship with the territory.
In addition to the redevelopment of the spaces, the project is promoting the dissemination of the cultural content of which the Heritage Site bears witness, responding to the ongoing need to consolidate the enhancement process of a place that risked falling into oblivion.
